Why Health Care Mobile Apps Matter So Much

As the United States experiences a presidential transition in the near future, health care will be a hot topic yet again. Will Obamacare be repealed? What parts will be salvaged? Is there something better on the horizon, or something a lot worse? With an aging population and health care costs rising across the board, the country faces an uncertain future of policy. But there’s a silver lining: policy might be hazy, but the future of health care mobile technology is looking bright. And it might just be the medicine the industry, and consumers, need.

Health care apps will save money and lives.

A scary statistic: over 250,000 Americans die each year from medical errors. The only things that kill more of us are heart disease and cancer. Medical errors kill more Americans than car accidents, and how much have we spent on traffic safety over the decades? This is a quiet crisis that needs attention and better technological solutions to mitigate the loss of life. Mobile health care apps are poised to be the difference.
Here’s an example: Rapid Healthcare, a maker of clinical mobile solutions, is currently pushing out Mother’s Milk and Donor Milk that track and verify that the right milk goes to the right infant in the NICU at the right time. The apps are designed to compensate for human error, document each feeding, and hold hospital staff accountable for this simple but crucial task. According to mobihealthnews, “[w]hen the app was piloted at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, the hospital was able to eliminate dual nurse sign-off and manual workarounds, and also saw reduced costs and liability.”
With this and other initiatives, Rapid Healthcare raised $1 million in new funding. Relatively small potatoes in light of potentially saving many infant lives, as well as reducing costs for hospitals that implement this mobile solution. This is the sort of crucial technology that we should be funding, perhaps on a federal level.

Apps can help treat the largest health care cost.

ehr-1476525_640But let’s get down to where most of our health care money goes: chronic disease. According to the CDC, a whopping “86% of all health care spending in 2010 was for people with one or more chronic medical conditions.” 86%! Forget debating whether to cover 26-year-olds, that’s your problem right there. Anything we can do to whittle down that cost is important, and because so much of chronic illness is preventable with diet and exercise, mobile health care apps are perfectly suited to this problem.
Remember, America is still in an obesity epidemic and caring for 1 in 3 Americans is expensive. More and more health professionals see “active engagement” with their patients to be the best care. Simply put, active engagement is reminding people to eat less and move more often than your typical once-a-year physicals. Rather, a constant reminder that urges patients (or soon-to-be patients) to care for themselves can literally save millions of lives and billions of dollars. In an era when we are facing physician shortages, mobile health care apps on a smartphone people have with them at all times are the perfect tool for this task.
In a study by the CVS Health Research Institute, “interventions to keep patients with chronic disease medication adherent [led] to improved health outcomes and lower medical spending,” and analysis showed that this could save between $38 and $63 million dollars per 100,000 members. Imagine health care apps where these interventions could be scheduled. Perhaps a group video chat to check in with others and a physician? Calendar reminders to take medication, get refills, work out, and eat right? Prerecorded videos from doctors with motivational lessons on care? These apps already exist or are in the works, and demand from consumers is rising.

Mobile health care is on the rise.

The marketplace is starting to pay attention. According to a recent survey of healthcare organizations by Redhat, 82% have a fully implemented mobile strategy, and 78% are seeing positive ROI from their mobile app investments. Because of this success, 36% of the survey respondents said they would develop additional apps in the coming year. This is surprising given that only about half of commercial enterprises have embraced mobile apps. If the health care industry is on the cutting-edge of something, then you better believe it’s something worthwhile.
The demand for these apps are coming internally at the moment, with “more productivity” and “better patient engagement and care” as the top reasons, but Redhat’s survey indicates that in the next year, the demand will mostly come from the patients themselves. As consumers get used to the idea of mobile health care apps, they will quickly become table-stakes technology for health care providers.
Considering that even Baby Boomers are embracing these apps (to the tune of over 75% of Boomers), it’s not a surprise that we are only just beginning to see demand for mobile solutions for personal health care.

The future of health care needs support.

But with all this promise, health care mobile technology is being hampered by budgets. The same responders in the Redhat survey also said that they are running into initial development budget roadblocks, and are only planning to increase IT budgets by about 15% for app development, deployment, and maintenance. And this is happening even though ROI is positive and many studies show that basic technology like smartphone apps will reduce health care spend. The Harvard Business Review cited an app called SmartQuit that showed 2 to 3x more effectiveness than unaided smoking cessation, as just one example.
The research is getting clearer every day: investments into health care app technology today can mean huge savings in the future, both for businesses and for society at large. As America ages, health care mobile tech is an industry that will loom large on our horizon. It behooves enterprises to start building apps that will disrupt traditional health care models, save lives, and grow the industry. It’s about time we embraced a smarter, healthier future.

4 Ways to Supercharge Your Retail App for the Holiday Shopping Season

November 17, 2016

Ashley Rondeau

It’s not just about Black Friday anymore. This holiday shopping season, 71% of consumers (and 79% of millennials) plan to purchase gifts online, and much of that shopping will happen through mobile apps. In fact, over the past 12 months, US mobile users have been spending 60% more time in retail apps in general, and that’ll only ramp up as we get closer to Christmas.
With the rush coming, is your company’s retail app ready to be your customer’s first (and possibly last) stop in their shopping journey? It better be! And to help you out, here are 4 ways to get your retail app supercharged for the holiday shopping season.

1. Get featured by an app store.

According to a report by AppAnnie, getting featured by either Google or Apple’s app store can increase downloads by up to 500%. Check out what they recently saw with Walgreens:
0916_global_growth_retail_app_en-pdf
When Walgreens’ app added Android Pay as a feature, Google decided to feature it on Google Play which led to a spike in downloads. It’s definitely a little “you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours,” but if you want the edge this shopping season, whatever you can do to get featured will directly translate to more traffic and more sales through your app. Embracing a Google or Apple-specific app feature like Walgreens did is a smart ploy. Other things you can do to increase your odds of being featured:

  • Keep your app reliable and up-to-date.
  • Garner more ratings by asking your current user base.
  • Write a good app description with great screen shots and comprehensive information.
  • Create buzz outside of the app store (even paid buzz).

2. Provide great virtual customer service.

One big reason why retail apps fail is because the bad ones don’t offer a personalized experience. The offers aren’t targeted, they don’t take advantage of location targeting, and the point we want to touch on here: they don’t engage with customers when they need help. Remember, retail app engagement is down in 2016 to just 2.72 minutes during a session. Frustrated users won’t hesitate to close out your app if they don’t get what they need.
So before the holiday rush, make sure you are providing great customer service in your app. Here’s how:

  • Barring anything else, make your User Interface (UI) dead simple to navigate.
  • Make your app load as fast as possible. (or make it seem like it is)
  • Provide an easy to use FAQ section just for mobile transactions.
  • If possible, provide instant chat support or even provide a support number.

The better service you can provide, the longer your customers will use your app. Remember, having extra customer service reps on standby to chat may be cost-effective if it leads to happier customers who spend more money.

3. Enhance the in-store experience.

If you have an actual physical brick and mortar store, it’s important your app pulls double duty: a) be a great online shopping portal, but also b) act as your customer’s personal virtual assistant in the real world.

As we’ve pointed out in previous posts, your retail app is a great source for behavioral analytics. Knowing what the user has looked at online, or even put into his/her virtual shopping cart (without clicking “buy”), can help you target deals and promotions to push to their app as soon as they’re nearby your storefront. After all, you should already have a robust loyalty program in place. But also consider these ideas:

  • A zoomable layout of your store for easy physical navigation.
  • Impulse purchase ideas, categorical gift ideas (ie, spouse, children, movie-lover), or “expiring soon” deals.
  • In stock/out of stock notifications.
  • Mobile payment options.
  • Additional loyalty points for “checking in”.

Give your customers a reason to walk around with your app launched on their smartphones. It’ll lead to big sales and happy customers.

4. Get social with user generated content & reviews.

Bazaarvoice research showed that mobile shoppers who view user-generated content have a 133% higher conversion rate. People love to see what others experience before purchasing, so (as long as you have great reviews) make it easy for your users to see customer reviews and pictures. Then after an online purchase, make it easy for your customers to share their purchase online. Take a cue from Amazon:amazon-shareBetter yet, if purchased on sale, include how much money they saved in the shared social post. It’ll incentivize their social network to check out similar deals. By providing every avenue for content to be shared by loyal users, your retail app can work to make your business go viral during the holiday shopping season.

3 Ways Enterprise Apps Will Save Your Business Big Money

November 11, 2016

Ashley Rondeau

As we talk to enterprise-level companies about their mobile needs, one topic comes up over and over again: saving money. No, not on our fee for developing their apps, but rather the all-important question of whether an enterprise app will truly save their business significant amounts of spend.
It’s an important question, especially as the mobile enterprise apps market climbs to $74 billion this year and is projected to grow to $128 billion by 2022. Big businesses are investing big dollars into their mobile work solutions and they want to know that their investment will save them money in the long run. Note: this is different from revenue generated by customer-facing apps which has been fairly well documented. Rather, our clients want to know whether their (usually) internally used app can increase spend efficiency. Yes they can! Here are 3 ways enterprise apps can save your business significant amounts of money.
woman-801872_640

1. The core value of why you’re building THIS enterprise app.

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how often businesses “just want an app,” without really thinking through their mobile-first strategy. It can be a hefty up-front investment so it’s crucial your enterprise understands why and how a mobile app can streamline their business. What pain-point is being addressed? Can the issue be fixed with traditional desktop software? How much money do you expect this specific app will save you in a fiscal year?
Once a clear strategy is laid out, a custom app can be built to surgically target the need of your business. For example, Syngenta (a large agricultural company) realized it needed a way for mobile workers to find, download, and use software they needed to do their job. So they built out a self-service portal accessible by a mobile app to empower their employees with little need for IT support. The result: nearly $1.8 million saved annually.
The take-away here is that even if a business is itching to get into the app game, having a clear mobile strategy is crucial in building the right app to save money. Once the game plan is figured out, your mobile app can’t help but save time and money. It’s its entire point for existing.

2. Less overhead due to a productive mobile workforce.

The world is going mobile and the workforce is part of it. By 2022, 1.87 billion people will be working remotely across the world. Once you give people the right device, the right app, and 4G/WiFi, they can get stuff done anywhere.
mobile-workforce-saves-time-and-money-towner-communications
Mitel via Townerkc.com has a great infographic that lists 8 ways a mobile workforce can save money, but just taking point 7 as shown above should be eye-opening. $10k saved per employee is nothing to sneeze at. And it’s not a story of a cheapo corporation forcing people to provide their own workspace. Working from home is shown to lead to a performance increase and a happiness increase. So a great mobile work experience can be win-win for the business that gets to save tens of thousands on overhead while giving workers what they want.
Of course, the key element here is that the mobile experience has to be great. Nothing is more frustrating for remote workers than an app that constantly breaks or makes their jobs more difficult. The mobile app your enterprise builds has to listen to the needs of your employees and constantly iterate to get better.

3. An agile, cloud-based business saves money.

Having a great mobile app goes hand-in-hand with taking your business to the cloud. In order for your mobile workforce to have a speedy, seamless experience on their devices, a solid cloud infrastructure is essential. Again, moving your computing requires an upfront cost, but cloud computing has been proven time and time again to save businesses money. Quick hit: a Rackspace survey showed that 88% of cloud using companies experienced cost savings, not to mention higher profits.
Another benefit is that being in the cloud makes it far easier to iterate on your business software, and we love agile companies that build agile apps. These apps have the following qualities:

  • Easy-to-use UI.
  • Small footprint in MBs.
  • Stripped to core functionality.

And with these qualities in mind, a cloud-based agile enterprise mobile app can not only cut costs overall, but keep your companies that much more competitive. Ultimately, it’s less work, faster results, and a boon for your business and workforce.
